Congress stands

A congress stand has a different job from an exhibition stand. Nobody here came to see your stand — they came for a session, a talk, the coffee break. You have a twenty-minute interval and a crowd walking through a foyer. In those twenty minutes the stand has to do two things: say who you are from a distance, and open a space where whoever comes closer can talk.

The constraints set the design
Congress venues are not exhibition halls. Floor space is tight, height is capped, and touching the walls or the floor is usually forbidden. The build window is one night, sometimes a few hours. These are not details the design adapts to later; they are the starting point. We build the stand to that frame first, then fill it.

Being read from a distance
In a foyer people do not look at your stand; they glance at it while walking past. So a congress stand works on few words, large type and a single message. A back wall with six lines on it is not read at walking pace; three words are. Deciding what to take out matters more than deciding what to add.

A place to talk
A good congress stand is not a panel, it is a small room. A counter to talk over standing up, a surface where the brochure is visibly in reach, a back area for the team. The design decides whether the visitor stands in front of the stand or beside it; where that is left to chance, people block the corridor and nobody stops.

Portability
Congress work rarely ends after one build: the same setup opens again in several cities within the year. So we design it modular — numbered parts, flight cases that are part of the stand, printed surfaces kept separate. When the date and the event name change, only that surface is renewed; the stand stays as it is.
